I work in an international team with many different people, nationalities, backgrounds & cultures and that variety in my role is something that I really love! I always have something to do or someone to talk to.
My family moved to Australia in 2013 and it meant re-inventing the career wheel! Starting at the bottom of the meat industry helped me understand the micro level dynamics and was amazed to see how much goes behind the scenes from the farm to food.
I believe that confidence is built through sustained practise. I was advised early in my career to ‘turn up’. I started to attend events and listen quietly from the back of the room. Then I was reminded that I couldn’t just ‘turn up’, I had to ‘say something’. It’s some of the best advice I’ve ever received. ‘Turn up & say something’ isn’t as easy as it sounds as you have to overcome nerves and imposter syndrome, but the more often you do it, the easier it gets.
A director in my business once told me that “confidence doesn’t come from always being right, but from not fearing to be wrong”. I have learned more from being wrong, than being right in my career, and that’s really powerful!
I think it’s important that we, as women have a core belief in ourselves and remember that we are as capable as anyone else, regardless of gender.
Being early in my career, it’s important to me that I absorb as much knowledge as possible about the industry so I can take that knowledge into all decisions I make when trying to contribute to the future of the industry.
I joined Meat Business Women to grow my network as well as take advantage of the masterclass series, the range of which is diverse and I always leave having learned a new tool to support my development.
Having a Meat Business Women mentor has genuinely influenced decisions that I’ve made in my professional career. I really valued the opportunity to talk through challenges and get a different opinion and perspective on how best to deal with them.
Working in the meat industry is varied and often seen as a man’s world but I like that the industry has changed a lot even from when I first stepped into it. It is developing a lot.
It turns out you spend a lot of your career not really knowing the next step and that is ok, just do something you enjoy because it makes the biggest difference. I have worked directly with farmers on business improvement and worked across supply chains on efficiency projects for primary production. I have travelled the world completing sustainability audits and I have led on leadership training with farm businesses – very diverse.
I fell into the food industry. I started out in the administration team during summer break from uni at the local food laboratory and now I am Food Safety, Quality & Regulatory Lead. I’ve managed to work across a variety of food types from slaughterhouses to sandwiches, RTE and RTC products, spending 10 years in Bakery and now Par-fry quick service restaurant products.
My current role is as an owner/operator of a boutique butchery. The interesting part, is that I am currently studying my butchery apprenticeship – even at my age!
I would say my biggest superpower is being decisive. Making a decision under pressure takes skill. You need the confidence and speed to make strategic choices. Sometimes they aren’t always the correct choice, but I have found that you learn from these in both work and in personal life. I think it’s an important skill to focus on, particularly whilst working in a fast-paced environment such as the meat industry.
